Testing – Eye Charts
Most visual exams are painless. A series of various tests are performed. During an eye examination your eye care provider will ask you to read letters on a chart known as a Snellen chart. Usually during this test you are asked the letters on each line of the chart from 20 feet away. If you can read the letters that people with perfect eyesight can read at 20 feet from the chart, you are said to have 20/20 vision. If you can read at 20 feet what most people can read 40 feet from the chart then you have 20/40 vision. For children who are not old enough to know letters, a similar test is performed using shapes.
