Optometrist vs. Ophthalmologist
There are two types of eye doctors, optometrists and ophthalmologists. An optometrist is a doctor of optometry or O-D, trained to examine eyes for glasses, contact lenses and eye disease. An optometrist can diagnose and treat certain eye diseases depending on the licensing of the state in which he is practicing. Some optometrist can perform minor eye surgery, such as refractive surgery. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor or M-D, trained to diagnose and treat eye disease as well as perform surgery on eyes. A comprehensive eye examination can be performed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. When selecting an optometrist or ophthalmologist, check their credentials and be sure they’re board certified. If you’ve a specific problem, check to see if the doctor specializes in that condition. Contact an eye care professional for more information.
