Inserting Lenses
Inserting your new contact lenses can be a challenge, but with patience and practice, it can be mastered. The first step is to wash your hands with an anti-bacterial soap and start with a clean towel over your sink area. Be sure the sink drain is closed just in case a contact lens is dropped. After inspecting the lens for defects, dirt or tears, place the lens on the end of your dry index finger. Check to see that the lens is not inverted by observing the edge of the lens. The edge should curve upwards like a bowl; not flared outward. To insert the lens, be sure the upper eyelid is firmly held up against the brow with the opposite hand. This is best held by the lash area to eliminate blinking.
Then directly place the contact lens onto the cornea while looking straight ahead. Allow the lens to be attracted to the eye as it is released from the finger. Do not push the lens onto the eye. Once the lens is on the cornea, slowly release the upper lid and close the eye. This technique works well for soft and rigid lenses. Soft and rigid lenses are removed by using different methods. Soft lenses can be simply removed by pinching the lower edge of the lens and carefully removing it. It’s helpful to lubricate the soft lens prior to removal. Rigid lenses can be removed by blinking the lens into the palm of your hand or by using a small contact lens plunger. Contact an eye care professional in your area for more information.
