Injury or Trauma to the Eyes
If you’ve injured or traumatized your eye, immediate and proper treatment can prevent damage or loss of sight. If you feel a speck or something in your eye, refrain from rubbing it. Try lifting your upper eyelid and pulling it down over the lower eyelid. This will allow the eyelashes to brush the speck out. Blinking a few times and allowing the eye to move the particle out is also recommended. If this isn’t effective in removing the speck, keep it closed and see a doctor.
If you sustain a blow to the eye, place an ice compress on it for about fifteen minutes to minimize pain and swelling. A black eye or blurry vision could be symptomatic of internal damage. It might be a good idea to see an optometrist or ophthalmologist to make sure your eye’s okay. If your eye gets cut, bandage it and see a doctor. Don’t wash or apply pressure to an injured eye. Chemical burns to the eyes should be treated by rinsing with water for at least fifteen minutes. Rolling your eyeball around as much as you can will allow all parts of the eye to be rinsed. It’s not recommended to use an eyecup or bandage. Seek medical assistance as soon as possible. If you’ve sustained an injury or trauma to the eye, contact an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
