Is there Discomfort from PRK Surgery?
Because P-R-K surgery uses a laser instead of a scalpel, there is no bleeding, and minimal disturbance of eye tissue. Therefore, most people experience little or no pain. During the procedure, local anesthetic is all that’s needed, and most patients can go home directly afterward. Your eye will be covered with a patch, which can usually be removed the next day. Though the eye shouldn’t hurt, it may be more sensitive to bright lights, causing a halo effect around certain light sources.
For the first few weeks, it may also feel like there’s something in your eye. However, this sensation will gradually disappear, as the outer layer of the cornea grows back. To ease any discomfort, the doctor may prescribe special eye drops. Typically, this is all that’s needed. Of course, everyone may respond differently to surgical procedures. For more information about what you can expect during and after P-R-K, consult an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
