Crossed Eyes in Adults
Strabismus (struh-BIZ-muss) is the medical term for eyes that are misaligned or crossed. Although this condition is most commonly found in children, it can occur in adults, too. When an adult has strabismus, it’s usually because there is a malfunction in at least one of three areas: the brain, the nerves that control the eye muscles, or the eye muscles themselves. Such problems may be caused by stroke, diabetes (die-uh-BEET-eez), tumor, multiple sclerosis (skler-OH-sis) or a thyroid gland problem. Strabismus in adults causes double vision, and usually requires either special glasses or surgery. If you are having double vision or notice misalignment of your eyes, see your doctor without delay. Consult an optometrist or ophthalmologist for more information.
