Soft vs. Hard Contact Lenses
There are two types of contact lenses to choose from; soft and rigid gas permeable. Soft lenses are larger in size and flexible and must remain wet to maintain shape. Rigid gas permeable lenses are smaller and less flexible and can dry without damaging the lens. When deciding which type are right for you consider initial comfort, visual clarity and durability. Soft lenses tend to be more comfortable initially with less adaptation time compared to rigid lenses.
On the other hand, rigid lenses tend to give a sharper vision correction than soft, especially in cases of astigmatism. Soft lenses generally last one year, unless worn on a disposable basis of one to two weeks. Rigid lenses can last two to three years with proper care. Contact an eye care professional in your area to find out more about the features of soft and rigid contact lenses.
