Sclera Inflammation
The sclera is the white part of the eye. It covers most of the eyeball which in turn is covered by a layer called the episclera. Either the sclera or the episclera can become inflamed. Most often scleral inflammation occurs in association with rheumatic disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Episcleritis is milder and usually more common. Both conditions are diagnosed by a red patch that forms on the surface of the eye or the dull pain that the condition causes. Depending on severity, some blurring of vision may be noticed. If you think you have sclera inflammation, see your eye doctor, who may be able to prescribe some eyedrops or oral medication to relieve the problem.
