Lumps on the Eyelids – Papilloma
Papilloma (pap-ill-LOAM-uh) is a term referring to a growth on the outer layer of a body surface, be it skin or some sort of mucous (MUE-kus) membrane such as the intestine. Occasionally a papilloma can form on the eyelid or on the eyelid’s margin. Its color can vary from pink to black. These tend to grow very slowly, and are usually harmless. They may, however, be unsightly. If you are uncomfortable with the appearance of the growth, it can usually be removed using a local anesthetic. If it’s not obvious, however, there is no real medical reason for removing it. See an optometrist or ophthalmologist if a growth appears on or near the eye, just to be safe.
