Cysts of the Eye
Cysts (sists) are small lumps or bags filled with fluid that form on the upper or lower eyelids.
What Causes Eye Cysts
Cysts on eye is produced when an oil-producing gland in the eyelid becomes blocked, and even infected. Sometimes cysts enlarge to a point that vision is affected. In some cases, a cyst will remain small and disappear on its own without the need for medical treatment. However, cysts can linger and enlarge to a size that causes pressure on the cornea, which is the clear protective outer covering of the eye. When this occurs, you may notice a slight impairment in your sight. If the cyst enlarges, fails to diminish, or becomes otherwise troublesome, it you should contact an eye doctor.
Recommended eye custs treatment may consist of simply applying a warm compress to the eye to aid in the healing process. An antibiotic medication may be prescribed as well. In some cases surgery to remove the cyst may be recommended. If your health care provider recommends surgery, it is usually be performed in the doctor’s office. For more information about eyelid cysts, please consult an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
