Current Contact Lens Developments
As contact lenses continue to advance, they offer more choices and more solutions for the wearer. One such development is the toric (tore ik) lens, a special type of soft lens that can correct moderate amounts of astigmatism. There are also lenses that act as a bandage, called therapeutic contacts. Used in the treatment and rehabilitation of certain eye disorders, therapeutic lenses can relieve pain, promote healing and help the eye stay moist. Another type of contact can actually reshape the cornea, offering an alternative to surgery, while correcting problems like myopia in as little as four to six weeks. Still other contacts are available to treat visual disorders in children as small as two years old. Colored lenses now come in more colors than ever, and more natural-looking shades. Finally, one flexible new design combines the advantages of gas-permeable lenses with the comfort of soft contacts: it’s made of R-G-P material in the center, surrounded by soft lens material around the edge.
